Project Objective
The main objective of this study is to investigate the feasibility of utilizing the Georgia Loaded Wheel Tester (GLWT) in testing the moisture damage in asphalt mixtures.
Project Abstract
The main objective of this study is to obtain mixtures and mechanical properties for various asphalt mixes. These properties will be utilized in evaluating the effects of moisture on various types of asphalt mixes. The Georgia Loaded Wheel Tester (GLWT) will be utilized in predicting the moisture resistance of the asphalt mixes included in the study.
Task Descriptions
The following tasks will be performed in this project:
- Task 1 – Obtaining asphalt and aggregate samples.
- Task 2 – Preparing samples: Samples will be prepared in the Gyratory compactor. Some samples will not contain any anti-stripping agents while others will.
- Task 3 – Establishing Testing Protocols: UW will examine various testing protocols in the GLWT. Efforts will be made to test asphalt mixes at various saturation levels.
- Task 4 – Performing wet dry cycling: The samples will be subjected to various levels of wet dry cycles.
- Task 5 – Performing GLWT testing on samples: The GLWT test will be performed on the samples.
- Task 6 – Examining Samples: All samples tested in the GLWT will be examined to determine if moisture damage can be detected.
- Task 7 – Summarizing Procedures: The most promising testing procedure for moisture damage will be identified. The testing steps will be documented and then verified.
- Task 8 – Preparing a final report: UW will prepare a short and concise final report summarizing all the significant findings.

Relationship to Other Research Projects
The GLWT has been used historically to determine rut resistence. Minimal research has been done to use the GLWT in predicting moisture damage in asphalt mixes.
Technology Transfer Activities
Transportation Departments in region 8.
Potential Benefits of the Project
The results of this research will be helpful in identifying potential moisture problems with asphalt mixes.
