Project Objective

The goal of the project is to take the concept of Adaptive Signal Control to a position whereby the department will be able to initiate the procurement of a system. The research objectives are articulated as a series of questions:

  • Which area would prove the most effective location for Utah's first Adaptive Signal Control installation?
  • What are the technical implications of an installation?
  • What are the likely cost benefits?

Project Abstract

A study has shown that Adaptive Signal Control is effective for both arterials and networks. It showed that Adaptive Control is an effective traffic control system for coping with incidents. The project concluded with a plan to move toward implementation. This project will take the adaptive control concept forward through a more detailed examination of technical implications of a new installation. It will address alternative implementation sites and provide a detailed assessment of the likely effectiveness of the preferred location.

Task Descriptions

  • Draft, submit, and acquire approval of a detailed scope.
  • Establish a working relationship with the traffic management technical sub-committee.
  • Establish criteria for selection of the test site.
  • Identify candidate sites for an adaptive signal control installation on the basis of criteria.
  • Investigate alternative candidate adaptive control systems.
  • Develop a cost-benefit analysis
  • Identify the technical implications of adaptive control implementation (detection, controllers, software, hardware).
  • Report
